THE PROCESS - SKETCHING

I always start out generating ideas by gathering reference and drawing out some rough ideation sketches. This helps me envision and design out the world. Utilizing traditional methods with pen and paper, I’m able to quickly generate ideas. After initial rough sketching, I can either take it digitally and do additional comps, or I do a rough block-out in 3D. From then on, I move back and forth from 2D to 3D, focusing on proportion/shape/scale in 3D and design/details in 2D.

THE PROCESS - 3D

Depending on the project and task, I will use 2D and/or 3D methods or a combination of both. For many client projects working in 3D is essential. Working with the level designers, storyboard artists, and environment artists, utilizing 3D in my workflow allows for an optimal flow for production. I can block out entire environments in 3D and have the rest of the production in sync. Using Blender, I’m able to create detailed environments with ease. I’m also able to texture and light the environments and props to get a quality finish. After the 3D stage, 2D is essential in finishing and creating a polished piece.

THE PROCESS - 2D

In an illustration pipeline, I use a combination of paint, photos, and textures to create concept design illustrations to showcase a specific design or environment.
